You work for some business and the CEO says "we are doing it great", it is a biased point of view, without data, it is just an opinion. So, you take the data of the business (sales, expense, etc.) and you chart it and compare with the previous year (aka YoY chart), maybe you find that yes, the company is earning more, or maybe not.

Statistic is about facts and facts could change the mind.
