The char of Indeed Job is a bit misleading (statistics and lies). For example, Perl. Perl is still used for scripting. However, I don’t see people hired because they know Perl and I have not seen a Perl project (a project that is done mainly in Perl) for a decade. I.e. knowing Perl will ensure nothing.

It is the same with SQL and JavasScript, people use it but it is not the same than a project done mainly with SQL (is it possible) and/or JavaScript.

About SQL, devs aren’t hired because they know SQL, but they know Oracle, SQL Server, Mysql or PostgreSQL. All of them use SQL but with some differences. Also, the programming is different. A dev that uses Oracle must know SQL but also PSQL. I cringe when a candidate for a post says “I know SQL” because it is too broad and generic.

And about Java… Businesses don’t hire a Java developer but a Java EE developer or a Java Spring developer or a Java Android developer, they are different and not interchangeable. An expert could know all of them. It is the same with JavaScript. Both Java and JavaScript are not wildcard.

When a developer says “I know Java” then, most of the time, it’s somebody that learned the basic of Java but it is unable to create an EJB, a Activity or to know what is the meaning of @ autowired ,i.e. it’s somebody useless for the team.
